Jacob Lawrence abstract art

Fourth grade learned about the influential African American Artist Jacob Lawrence and how he used abstract colors, shapes, and forms to create the human form. With bright colors and lines Lawrence created movement and allowed the figures in his compositions to tell a story. Often retelling of an important time in African American History.

Fourth graders teamed up in pairs and with 5minutes on the clock were asked to create  figure drawings of each other. Once complete, students color blocked the background to create contrast and filled in the their figures with black tempera paint
