Complementary Colors and Mosaic Owls
3rd grade students learn about the ancient art of mosaics and how they are made from glass, stone, and in our case paper! We learn about the color wheel and how it is used to organize colors into groups such as primary, secondary, and tertiary color groups. Next, students focus on creating mosaics using only complementary colors and with a scientific experiment students learn that two colors that sit across form each other on the color wheel are complements. Meaning they look good together! Students choose thier two complementary colors and using an owl template (school mascot) they color their owl's wings on color and their owl chest the complement. Using half inch strips they cut into swuares students are reminded that no matter what their cut paper tiles must never ...ever...ever... touch!
