Fall leaves Collage

Currently the kindergarten has been learning about the seasons and when the seasons change from summer to fall, things outside begin to change. For our next project students learn about how leaves fall from the trees and change colors. We review our colors and talk about which colors are mostly seen during the fall and why fall leaves change.

Using 4 6x6 sheets of paper in fall colors red, orange, yellow, brown and a document camera I walk students through how to draw 4 different types of leaves. Using a their vocabulary about line students are able to reapply their knowledge of line and line directions to help their guided step by step drawing process.

The next class students begin to draw the background for their collage  using manilla 12x18 sheets of paper. Starting twitch brown crayon they draw a horizontal or side to side line through their paper and color only underneath the line to show the ground where the leaves will fall. Students receive pumpkin templates and are asked to traced them and cut them out and decorate using vertical lines to make sure they they appear as pumpkins and not as oranges or basketballs. Once finished students carefully glue their pumpkin onto their manilla sheet  of paper.

The third day takes most of the class and involves students carefully cutting out their leaves and glueing them neatly onto their sheet of paper.

Small tip:  demonstrate how to glue using the "dot... dot... not a lot rule." The kids actually sing the song while remembering the use only pea size amounts of glue to prevent glue lakes.

Here are a few in proces...
