My Very Own Color Wheel
4th grade students began the school year with a color lesson. They first began learning that another word for color is HUE. I discuss with the students that the purpose of the color wheel is to organize color, and that some people or professions may have a different way to organize colors. For example scientist use R.O.Y.G.B.I.V. The color wheel is inspired by nature and can be seen after a rainbow when it rains. The color wheel contains 3 main color groups.
Primary - the originals that can not be made by any mixing colors (red, yellow, blue)
Secondary- colors from mixing two primary colors ( orange, purple, green)
Tertiary- the mixing of one primary and one secondary ( yellow orange, blue violet, etc.)
Using a 12x18 sheet of paper carefully folded into 12 boxes, students create a template and begin tracing it into each box. Next students begin to label and color each box using the three coloring rules and crayon:
1. Color in one direction
2. Know when to mix (tertiary colors only)
3. Color dark (make it juicy so the colors pop!)
Once finished student cut and past their unique color wheels onto a sheet a black paper, making sure their name is on the back in white crayon.
