Gruffalo

While listening to  the  story of the Gruffalo written by Julia Donaldson, illustrated by Axel Scheffler. The book tells students of a mouse's journey through the woods and the enemies that he encounters along the way.  Using context clues students were asked to recreate the characters and setting within the story. Each class was broken into groups of four and asked to complete the illustration using crayons on 12x24 sheets of paper. While drawing students leaned about placement and spacing in a composition from vocabulary such as:  horizon line, foreground, middle ground, and background.

Before students begin, go over ground rules of how to collaborate in the groups by being respectful, cooperative, and fair.

Overall a great student project and once the drawings are complete and each group reveals what they imagined the Gruffalo and his friends look like we reread the book and reveal the actual appearance of each animal.
